Preservation of human remains for various religious and social reasons has been done for thousands of years. Today there are three major reasons for embalming: preservation, sanitation and restoration. We believe that restoring the body of a loved one to a natural and peaceful appearance is highly important. It allows the family an opportunity to physically confront the death in a way that is more visually pleasing.
Embalming as practiced in the U.S. today gained acceptance during the Civil War as a way to postpone decomposition until proper burial could be arranged. Disinfection during embalming decreases the possibility of the spread of disease, while preservation allows time for post death ceremonies, such as a viewing and funeral.
