Gerald LeRoy Powers passed away from a heart attack on September 12, 2009, at his home in Stansbury Park.
Gerald was born in Moore, Idaho on October 24, 1942. The second child of Robert and Wilma Powers, Gerald spent most of his youth in Idaho. He graduated from Declo High School in 1961, where he played football and ran track, an event in which he set a record which stands to this day. As such he was inducted into the DHS Athletic Hall of Fame in May, 2001. He later went on to attend Ricks College on a football scholarship.
After moving to Salt Lake City, he met Janice Christensen, whom he later married on September 25, 1963. The marriage was later solemnized in the Manti LDS Temple on December 5, 1964.
Gerald was active in the community, serving as a member of the Rotary Club and the Chamber of Commerce.
He also served on the Tooele County School Board.
Gerald was very involved in community and high school athletics, refereeing football and basketball for more than 30 years.
Gerald served as a bishop, stake presidency member, member of the High Council, and member of the bishopric. In later years he served in the Transient Bishop’s Office, working with Salt Lake’s homeless population. He and Janice also served as Service Missionaries in Salt Lake’s inner city. At the time of his death, Gerald was a worker in the Salt Lake Temple.
Gerald enjoyed travel and golf, and was a fan of any sports team whose home was in Utah.
Gerald is survived by his wife of 46 years, Jan, his six children DeNae (Brett) Handy, Shane (Jennifer) Powers, Jill (Kevin) Anderson, Kimberlee (Dennis) Almond, Jason (Alison) Powers, and Amber (Tavis) Stubbs, as well as 22 grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers Dennis (Rhonda) and Lloyd (Karen) Powers, sister LuAnna (Dale) Mothershead, and sister-in-law Karen Powers.
He was preceded in death by his son Jared, his parents Robert and Wilma, his brother Dale, and his father-in-law Grant Christensen.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 17, at 11 AM in the LDS chapel at 390 E. Village Blvd. in Stansbury Park, 84074. Friends and family may call Wednesday, September 16 at Tate Mortuary 110 S. Main, Tooele, from 6-8 p.m. and at the church Thursday prior to the funeral starting at 9:30

My prayers and thoughts are with all of Uncle Jerry’s family. Uncle Jerry was a great man and will truthfully be missed. I wish that I could be there to celebrate his life but I will be there in thought and prayer. God Bless you all in this time of loss and sorrow. Love you all Sondra
