“The Boss”
Marlene Palmer Caldwell, the first Queen of Grantsville, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 15 at 6:25 p.m. She was born on Dec. 27, 1933 and became the first “Miss Grantsville” at the age of 16. Marlene was an incredible woman who always remained young at heart. Her playful sense of humor and infectious laughter brightened our days and made any occasion more enjoyable. Her warmth, concern and compassion for all creatures from stray cats to mistreated dogs, hummingbirds and hawks, was truly amazing. Her knack for finding and healing wounded things was highly developed and a list of those helped or healed would likely encircle the world. She always stood up for the underdog and no one in need was ever turned away. All of the “old folks” she cared for each week will really miss her. When it came to children and grandchildren, her love and patience was boundless. She cheerfully gave countless cooking and water skiing lessons, assisted with homework, sewing and craft projects, bravely taught many of us to drive. She celebrated special occasions with zest, homemade cakes, and Skyline shrimp and never forgot a birthday. She considered a life an adventure, embraced it to the fullest and always welcomed a challenge —so the fish in Strawberry Reservoir will certainly be resting much easier these days. Marlene could always be counted on to find a solution to a problem. Advice was given freely and often forcefully — earning her the well-deserved family nickname of “The Boss.” Her creative talents included diverse projects in woodworking, crafts and oil painting, as well as extending to her beloved garden — making this a place of beauty, peace and serenity. Her infinite patience with the countless automobile restoration projects that passed through the garage over the years, finally earned her the beautiful Mercedes that she always wanted. Mom, we miss you more than words can say — but we shall always remember — and cherish — the laughter. Marlene is survived by her husband Harvey J. Caldwell, sister Carol Rae (Bill) Henderson, brother Darrel (Ranae) Palmer, 10 children, as well as numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents Ross and Orae J. Palmer, sister Karma Jean Palmer and granddaughters Cassandra Tucker and Angelynn Snodgress. Services were held on Friday, Nov. 20 at Tate Mortuary.
